Yes, cereal is a very easy go-to meal to serve on mornings when the kids are fighting, the dog’s barking and you’re running late.  That’s pretty much every morning in my house.  But there is not one box of cereal to be found.  There is a reason for that:  cereal makes you fat.  Most breakfast cereals are very high on the glycemic index.  The glycemic index, or GI is a measure of the effects of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels.  For most people, sending an overwhelming surge of sugar into your system is the prescription for building excess body fat and sets you up for a major crash later.  It takes 2 minutes to microwave an egg and turkey sausage.  Add some fresh fruit and breakfast is served.  Or I guess you could serve up any one of these cereals that are almost devoid of all nutritional value and full of empty calories.

Top 10 most sugared kids cereals:

#10: General Mills Cinnamon Toast Crunch: 34 % sugar

#9: Frosted Rice Krispies: 39% sugar

#8: Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes: 39% sugar

#7: Reese’s Puffs: 40% sugar

#6: General Mills Apple Cinnamon Cheerios: 42% sugar

#5: Kellogg’s Apple Jacks: 42% sugar

#4: Trix: 43% sugar

#3: Kellogg’s Smorz Cereal: 43% sugar

#2: Kellogg’s Froot Loops: 45% sugar

There are some relatively healthy cereals out there with all natural ingredients, very low sugar and good amounts of fiber and protein. Kashi makes a great range of cereals – easy, not too bad for you and the kids like them too.

I agree that boxed cereal is a poor breakfast choice. I was addicted for years, but within the last 6 months cut it out of my life completely. There are so many better real food choices out there!

Even if it’s a “healthy” cereal, it’s still totally processed. i’ve heard there’s more nutrition in the corn used to make the outside of the box shiny than there is left in the cereal itself. (which is saying a lot, because there’s not much nutrition in corn!)

This article is why I no longer eat cereal: http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/2010/8/video-healthy-cold-cereal-1/

Besides all the sugar, the proteins in the cereal (from the grains) are actually TOXIC for you! In the extrusion process the proteins are super high heated causing them to go rancid. Rancid food is toxic. We’ve replaced store bought cereal with the recipe for homemade cereal in the above post. It contains natural sugar in the form of Grad B (which is actually better than Grade A) Maple Syrup.
